Q ''ring'' tester

Blog entry posted in 'Projects', September 29, 2013.

Hey all, decided to share ring-tester which i made recently. Its functioning, only little bit surface furbishing left.
What this meter tests, is coils/transformers ability to ''ring'' You'll see easily ringing with 'scope when you apply square wave to inductor. Shown waveform accross the inductor is decaying sine-wave. If q-value is higher, ringing takes longer time to decay, and if there is short in windings, ringing decays much faster, or doesnt apply at all. Q-factor is issue in SMPS's for an example. There are however some issues related to this meter, if you want this kind of meter, DIY like me, get a kit, or buy fully assembled. I saved around 60-100€ if i'm not terribly wrong by making it myself. Of course, if i would have gotten the amount of money, i would have bought it.

    Discussion welcome! and comments too...

Hi Fez Coil ringers or testers have been around a while. Personally, I have tried one or two but abandoned them for any kind of accuracy with TV Line Output Transformer testing. In my experience, even a faulty LOPTX will ring or read OK because the Voltage used for testing is way too low to make windings actually show a fault if they have one (one winding arcing through to another winding etc.) Just my 2c Regards, tvtech

hey tech, yeah i read about this, but decided still to build it. shouldn't be any harm building these no? how do you test these transformers, care to share? :) if it's possible at all even describe it...
