I am looking for an easy way to generate a square wave with the following characteristics:

- 200mVPP
- 50 KHz frequency
- able to source 40mA (will be used with loads as low as 5 ohms)

My current idea is to use a small transformer. Any other ideas?

Are you talking about a simple voltage divider? Since my load is around 5 ohms, ideally the Thevenin equivalent resistance of the divider would be much less than that.

Use a 555 timer with a voltage divider on the output buffered by a unity gain rail-to-rail opamp that can do 40mA.
