4029

Hi another newbie question!

I know if i set up an astable 555 timer and put this to a 4017 then the LED's will go from left to right, but if I put the output of the 555 timer to a 4029 and set the up/down high what direction would the LED's go. And if I set the up/down low what direction would the LED's go?

Thanks once again for your help.

The 4029 is a binary/BCD up/down counter it's outputs are a 4 bit code, It is different from a 4017 that has a 1 of 10 output. Check the datasheet to learn more.

Your counter seems to work. The title says "4028" and the OP says "4029". Good.

The 4029 is a binary/BCD up/down counter, which has 4 outputs. Given a clock pulse, the outputs will count 0000, 0001, 0010, 0011, ..., 1001 in BCD mode for the up direction, and 1001, 1000, ..., 0001, 0000 when counting in the down direction.

You mention a 4017, which has 10 outputs and only a single Q output high at a given time. If you want to get a similar output from the 4029, you can connect a 4028 (BCD - decimal decoder) to the outputs the 4029; this will give a function similar to the 4017, but you will be able to control the direction of the LEDs.
