Use whatever you feel comfortable with. The job you need to do is simple enough that practically any microcontroller should be able to handle it. Needless to say, with the amount of time and effort required to learn to program a microcontroller, plus the cost of a programmer, the cost of the microcontroller itself is probably the least of your worries - so I wouldn't pick one based solely on what free samples you already have; instead pick one based on the resources that are available to help you get started.
