Hey all, what is an IGBT in simple terms? What are some of the uses for them? Thought you guys could explain this a little better than wikipedia.
Thank you,
Ben
It's a transistor that uses a insulated gate like a mosfet to turn it on. Instead of controlling it by current it does it with voltage. That is the simple answer from a simple point of view. I'm sure others will give you better more technical explanations though.

Which is better IGBT or Mosfet?
When compared to the IGBT, a power MOSFET has the advantages of higher commutation speed and greater efficiency during operation at low voltages. ... The IGBT combines the simple gate-drive characteristics found in the MOSFET with the high-current and low-saturation-voltage capability of a bipolar transistor.3 Oct 2011
Can someone make a recommendation here? I'm not sure what to do. Even the local company I hired here in North Port isn't sure how to optimize our property's systems.
