Can a TTL/CMOS Chip Sink Current?

I am curious if a general TTL/CMOS chip, such as:

can sink currnet (i.e. 5v----LED----pin(0V) as opposed to GND----LED----Pin(5V))?

Oftentimes I see them source current (i.e. drive LED) but I dont recall ever seeing one sink..

If they can sink, how much on average since the datasheet fails to mention it?

the cover sheet says to download several additional documents for complete datasheet info. I'm pretty sure the first one will tell you sink and source current limits for that logic family.

sinking or sourcing for an led is common. though I dont think you can get much current from the 4000 series. The TI parts are spec'd for something like 6.8 mA at 15V, less for lower Vdds

If you can manage a 5V system, the 74HC line can sink or source upwards of 30 mA per pin though total chip current max is like 70 mA.

That is an incomplete datasheet because the HEF line is for replacements. Get a complete datasheet for a CD4017 from Texas Instruments attached here.

It show that it is Cmos, not TTL and operates with a supply voltage from 3V to 18V. It shows that its outputs go high as it sequences.
It shows that it can sink and source about the same amount of current. The output current depends on the supply voltage.
Most ordinary CD4xxx Cmos outputs are the same.
