Can Charlieplexing be used for commercial purposes or is it protected with a patent?

I wouldn't know, but I wouldn't have thought it's something you could patent, as it's probably been done many times in the past? - well before 'Charlie' wrote about it in a Maxim application note.

Patent 4,394,653 looks relevant, but since it was filed in 1980 it's probably expired long ago.
