College: Thinking of giving up

It's not as simple as "just doing the work." I wish I could do part-time but I'm being pressured due to time and money limits to take the max hours each term. That's bad news for me because this rathole is filled with people who can coast through life with no effort; or rich bookworms who have no obligations outside class and can easily study 10, 12 or 14 hours a day. GPA is just a measure of how much time was on your hands.

My classes are filled with crooked professors who give favors to class ass-kissing suckups and go math-nazi on anyone else. I once had this ******* give me 0 credit for an amplifier design I got perfectly right simply because it had a typo (junk writing that I forgot to erase) that suggested current was coming out of a MOSFET gate. Everything else matched the answer key exactly. Zero Credit is supposed to mean you got everything wrong or skipped the problem. When I confronted him, he refused to change the grade. I hope he gets hit by a truck.

If they're not crooks, they're just stubborn. My junior year was fraught with senile old fools who reject any work that reflects any trace of independent thinking or out-of-class instruction. If it doesn't match the answer key--its wrong. Nevermind that the circuit works the same or the equation yeilds the same answers--its just wrong. End of story. They'll do anything to keep people like me out the profession.

"Do the work." Yeah I've been there. I do nothing but work and I still get crappy grades. Even when things seem to finally be improving, I fall right back down rock bottom. It's infuriating. I can't win, and if quit, my life would only get worse. If I hear one more know-it-all bragging about how perfect their grades are, I'll kick out their teeth and shove them down their throat so god damn hard, they'll have to sit on food to eat it.

Perhaps your grades might be a reflection of your attitude problem?.

You catch more flies with honey than vinegar!.

yeah, calm down some and STOP worrying about others! I can't stress that enough.. who care if they kiss-ass. forget about them. Didnt you decide to join the program so that YOU could learn? Work on what YOU need to do so that you understand the material and get better grades.

If you work very hard at your caoursework, I assure you, you will undertsand the material much better then any of the other slackers and in the end, you win and they lose.

okay digitan: Youve had your bad taste and a heavy head. You were steamed up and let-off steam. Thats that. Time that you simmered down a little and took a break. Now dont try to paint the world in red the way you see it. No denying it is, but only at times and in parts, and for all of us too!!
Just get down and do something useful, something you are good at. Hurling profanities and other four-letter words will only prove that you just want to scream, instead of doing your best.

The whole world is not Eden, but there is one somewhere in the world....

p.s: Please desist from using profanities

Profanities?
You should hear some of the F-um-up words used on other forums I visit.

Seriously I think he's just using this board to let off steam, clear his head and get advice and support from other people.

digitan,
I know you feel your being victimised or bullied by the professers and if it's true you should report them. However you must be sure that this is the case and you're not being paranoid or have some sort of persecution complex. Perhapps you might have a bad attitude towards your lecturers and they take offence to it or maybe you're not sticking up for yourself.

Do you get on with any other of the students?

If so talk to them to see what they think and if they agree they might even stick upi for you.

If you don't get on with you peers then you should think about looking at how you treat them, perhapps you could consider getting some counseling even more so if you're depressed.

Hey Guys, calm down. This is not a place to argue. Why don't you continue this elsewhere, perhaps you can use PMs or e-mail?

I dunno. The past year or so I've been too pissed off in general to hang out with new people. The people I know are cool, but this place is mostly full of dweebs who only talk about school all the time. And I'm not exaggarting here.

Anyway, I had my last exam today. There's no way I was going to pass that class, so I only studied for the remaining classes and only took this one to avoid the 'incomplete.' There's probably a 90% chance I'll be on probation which means I can't transfer out of this shithole. I'd rather put a bullet in my brain than go through another year of this.

I studied in italy electronics in high school. it was crap i when i knew the mere basics i knew more than a teacher or two that told me it was my fault that my power amp burnt out on a screwed up reused heatsint to which it made poor contact and had no thermal paste.
the one that went to university (unlike the other two) understood the day of my exam that to use a number of window comparators was a lot more of an electronic lock than he had figured i could make with a comparator. I learned all i knoe on my own and laughed at the exam theory thhat was simple comparator and between me another kid and the said teacher we did it for rest of the class as well.

Its always interesting to watch people who have failed in the past encourage other people to fail. Im sure the pathology there is fascinating. It must be like comfort in a crowd.

Stick with it, youre almost there. You wouldnt be the first successful person who had less than ideal grades in college. When you look back, it will seem much easier than it does now. Other than the random (mis)use of question marks, I never wouldve thought the N-Man and Mistakeca would have anything in common! ...Talk about a bad attitude!!!

Like they told us in boot camp "Pain is temporary, being a Marine is forever"
You're almost there, quit now and regret forever !!

hm basically it's about having that damn peice of paper. don't know what it's like where you are and i only did high school but here thats all it's about as nobody does anything with their paper. so why the hell were they thee in the first place ????????
unfortunately i was not good at looking good for the teachers although i did come out 3rd in class. i was more for getting down to it.

Sorry for the choice of words, but the whole thing is more frustrating than anything I can remember. In fact I used never curse until last semester. I was told if you're polite and behave a certain way, you'll be rewarded but now I know that's a load of crap.

Anyway, its all over so I'm just trying to think about it as little as possible. If it weren't for freerunning my blood pressure would be in the 300's after all I put up with. Every day I can go to bed without wanting to explode or beat the living crap out of everybody is an okay one by me. Of course, now I have to look for a summer job and get turned away by jackasses all day. There are some things you don't get used to.

Digitan,
I went through your projects....impressive! You wont die of hunger or need. Now, with THAT kind of background, you will do good in life. But there is always a better life to live. That, unfortunately, has a catch. You have to grin and bear it.
Remember, you can travel in many ways and eat at many places. But there is a difference. Call that Class, Level..... whatever.
To reach that you need patience, perseverence, callousness and .......THAT piece of Paper!!!
Forget the unbearables; just Go and GET IT!!

We all wish you success and The best Luck!

The problem most people have with electronics (I'm talking about the higher level stuff here, i.e. not just ohm's law) is the mathematics, you have to study things like Maxwell's equations and Laplace's equation so you can be the best project builder in the world and have a strong enough understanding electronic principles to design circuits, but this doesn't mean you're clever enough to pass a degree, not at least without putting a great deal of time and hard work into it anyway.

A few thoughts on my college experience...

The math is definitly a killer. Depending on how far you are in your education, you might want to consider getting a pretty decent calculator. I picked up one of these a couple years ago: http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00006D2Q1.01-A2R0FX412W1BDT._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg , probably the best purchase I ever made. Its kinda difficult to use it for the higher level math, but its a real time saver for the simultanious equations and such.
Not to mention the full qwerty keyboard

Also, try to get your hands on some old tests from other students that have had the class before...even if the prof. changes the questions, you'll still have a good idea of what to expect.

Digitan, I have to agree with some guys here when they ask you to calm down. I think your reaction is well over the top. Also the poster that bolded "dont do it" also applies to killing yourself.

As for me, I am what is called an "exception" (I made that up  ). Why? because right now, I'm NOT in school, but instead working a fair amount of hours, and making money. Unfortunately, it isn't my preferred field, but compared to the temporary jobs I had in the past, the one now is good.

Also, I live in a low income family. My family depends on me to bring in sufficient funds to help cover necessary expenses. (mainly food and bills)
If my income at any time is too low, my entire family suffers. when we suffer, we are talking like a fridge that is less than 1/8th full!

So to me, going to college is more like spending $10,000 at a casino and losing it all in one day.

Hiya Digitan,
Well mate from your last post it looks like you made the decision and quit . I must admit you do have a great mind for electronics . Now if I may offer a suggestion for an alternate career over here in Oz coded welders are in high demand and command top dollars, this would mean going back to tafe (college) and doing a course. So if your a hands on type of bloke this could be an avenue to take. I once was told that if I went over to Texas and worked on a road where the oil refineries are and did shutdowns for 5 years I'd become a millionaire and I wouldn't reach the end of the road.

anyway this is just a suggestion as I don't know what sort of wages a coded welder would get over in your area but getting a trade behind you would be a bonus for life.

Cheers Bryan
