DIP Voltage Regulator

Hi,

I have just found the voltage regulators and DIP form and want to use these for my project. I havent been able to find a 12V output (~15V+ input) module in DIP form with an output capable of at least 2W (preferably more).

Has anyone come across something like this before?

2W is more than a DIP package can disspate. Only some sort of batwing package would be capable of 2W.

Is there a DIP package capable of 0.5W to 1W?

After some more searching I found something like this:

NATIONAL SEMICONDUCTOR|LM2597N-12|SWITCHING REG 0.5A 12V, 2597, | Farnell United Kingdom

EG 0.5A 12V, 2574, DIP8
Primary Input Voltage:25V
No. of Outputs:1
Output Voltage:12V
Output Current:500mA

This can apparently do 6W. Would this component be usable for a regulator?

Compared to a linear regulator, a switching regulator is ~85% efficient, meaning it dissipates much less power. However, the inductor and catch diode will take up some space.

On page one it shows an example of a circuit with the switch regulator. What is the minimum I could get away with using to allow it to work, just a single undctor and catch diode, or will I need all the capacitors etc shown.

You ABSOLUTELY need all of the capacitors. The only one you might be able to cheat on is Cin. You still need something, but you might be able to reduce its physical size to the next smaller can.
