Entertainment equipment on standby

Dear All,

I recently went to my uncles house who insists on turning off electrical equipment off at the socket rather than putting things on standby.

I was wondering would a simple mains timer plug be sufficient in turning off (during night) the now common entertainment centre setup?

Any other views or comments?

Cheers

I seem to recall that in many cases ( such as say a stand-alone tuner ) there was a nearly insignificant draw when "off." This often was caused by the chassis bonding capacitors so the switch is marked "standby" to meet guidlines and international regulations.

If the unit is remotely controlled, there will always be standby power, operating the circuitry required to remotely respond and turn on.

Literally unpluging all your gear each night will result in the joy of reprogramming everything each time you reapply power also. I would rather pay the basically insignificant power bill for standby mode.
