find the base of the number?
24+17=40

i did as 2*b+4+b+7=4*b

then i got answer as 11

if i add that i.e 40=41
4*b=4*b +1

then i am not getting answer why?

Correct.

if i add that i.e 40=41
4*b=4*b +1
You are way off here.

Try this:

24 + 17 = ? (base 10)
(2 x 11 + 4) + (1 x 11 + 7) = 44 (base 10)

40 = ? (base 10)
(4 x 11 + 0) = 44 (base 10)

Does that make sense?

now you are locked up.Now the situation is want to find the base
so i am adding it
so 40=44
4*b=4*b +4
now how can i find the radix(base)

Hi,

I have a question for you...

Where did you get this equation from:
24+17=40

That is not a valid equation because the left side 24+17 equals 41 and the right side equals 40, and as we all know 41 is not equal to 40. This means your equation with 'b' in it is also not valid. So i ask that question of you here so maybe you can explain.

That equates correctly if all numbers are base 11 (i.e., in decimal, 26 + 18 = 44).

You are right, when the numbers are in "base 10" it is nonsense, but in "base 11" it is correct.
