what kind of transistor should i use to control a 24V relay for switching a motor ON/OFF with inputs from an IC?

At a guess, I'd say a 2N2222A should handle the job. However, without more accurate information about the IC and the voltages and currents required and provided by the IC and relay, it's impossible to tell.

Can you describe your circuit in detail so we can have a better idea of what you might need?

ei torben thanks alot.

what kind of transistor should i use to control a 24V relay for switching a motor ON/OFF with inputs from an IC?

For this relay
24 VDC DPST N.O. $US 1.25
Mfg. - AMERICAN ZETTLER
Mfg.# - AZ2732-560-4
1-1/16" x 1" x 7/16"
Contact current: 8 amp @ 24 VDC/115 VAC
Coil resistance: 740 ohm

the coil needs 24/740 = 30mA.
With a transistor gain of 10 or less as it goes into saturation, almost any IC and any transistor can work with this relay.

Get a relay with contacts rated for a motor load and don't forget your coil suppressor diode or resistor or MOV.
