How to Troubleshoot Controller

I have what looks like a very simple control board for a kiddie ride that I am trying to restore. For now I would just like to be able to make it activate and start playing the obligatory 8-bit carnival music. It seems it is activated by the coin acceptor (on the controller, it's labeled "Coin Sw."). I have a push button wired to "Coin Sw." but when I push it nothing happens. Could it be that the coin acceptor is actually sending a specific signal rather than a simple high-low? I don't know how to analyze electronic components, and the real coin acceptor is missing. Any suggestions?

Also, when plugged in and wired to a 4" 5w speaker it just hums.
