Its a part of our project for school, so far we are building the Obstacle avoiding robot. I dont have much problems with the obstacle avoiding part or the Microcontroller programming but the beacon tracker has me stumped. Im totally clueless with the transmitter/Receiver parts.

The design needs to be able to track the beacon/transmitter within a 5meter range minimum and be able to go towards it.

Ordinary IR wont work so we're considering long range but the professor remarked that it gets a lot of interference once out in the sun.
Sound based was suggested but there will be a lot of interference
RF was also suggested and by far its getting me confused.

Any info/opinion regarding the matter will be much appreciated

IR and ultrasonics will get some interference, yeah - but I would still say they are your best bet. Ultrasonics with some discrimination based on pulse train widths, modulated IR with a sun shield, something along these lines.

I thought the sun shield was some sort of lens, but it turns out it was some sort of cover.
Thanks for the tip.
