have you considered starting with a PIC? There is a ton of info on the pic, so if this is your first micro, it would probably be a better place to start.

as far as considering asm programming pic is simply easier than 805x , but i have seen the atmel is cheaper than pic at my local store(almost similar config), also 805x has good C support(SDCC)
