You mean like a two way door bell setup? The circuit below will work as long as SW1 and SW2 are not pushed at the same time:

Pushing both SW1 and SW2 will short circuit the batteries.
 
Why not just use three wires?

Standard mains cable is cheap enough.

I'd thought of that but wanted to keep it as simple as possible until we get some feedback as to what the OP really wants.
