I used to have a schematic for a simple variable 5.5 volt voltage regulator for auto gages, but I can't find it.
Does any one have a schematic for a devise of this type? It needs a 12 volt input and be able to get from 5 to 6 volts out at about 2 amps max.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

It actually needs to be 14.5V input. At 2A, that means it is dissipating P= IE = 2*(14.5-6) = 17W, which means bolting the regulator to the car body to act as a heatsink.

At this power level, you are better off going with a **broken link removed**

TI may also has some switching modules that would work for you.
