you may want to use a 38khz ir led and a phototransistor pair.

Using IR as a distance sensor will produce different apparent distances for object of different colors.

with relation to the main discussion, how is it an aid for the blind if they have to "read" and lcd screen to "see" the distance of an object in front of them?

haha just curious how that works.
