Microphone element to drive other components

Hi all, I wanna get a microphone element to drive an NTE555. What little I know is I need a small capacitor that will charge via the mic element and then maybe a small NPN or PNP transistor to the trigger of the 555..... Am I on the right track ? Then I'm using the 555 to drive a decade counter connected to 120V power transistors for lights to flash on and off in different colors but all sound activated..... Thanks in advance, Jim
