I am thinking of creating an app that will act like a remote for specific appliances at home.
I need opinion on this.

The touch pads from Crestron a https://www.crestron.com/ are really expensive most about $3,000us.

We build automated rooms and use an Ipad or Iphone APP it's really the only way to go. https://Crestron APP for Ipads and Iphones or Smart Phones

Of course we use there control equipment but everything else is rs-232 or 422 sometimes we network if the equipment only has network capability.

They've been doing this at least for couple yrs now.

Edit: I read the documentation on INSTEON network, it uses their own Transmitters and Receivers all wifi that I could see. Crestron has wifi devices as well probably more expensive though. There is no monthly cost just buy the equipment and use their control software, which can be done by the user or some qualified Tech for hire.

Moble phone control was posible before the smart phone came out.
