Need help modifying a stepper motor circuit

You could try 220Ω, but those are Darlingtons and have much higher gain than a 2N2222. A 2N2222 can only handle about half an amp of current, too. Better be a pretty small stepper or you will blow the transistors!
 
Yes, use mosfets - N channel, logic level. Don't even need or want resistors.
