Are you talking about a ANN ( artificial neural network )? They are very good at pattern recognition, not so sure about color tho.

:? I'll put in my 2 cents and say: All Electronics Corp. (https://www.allelectronics.com) has 3 barcode scaners. 2 are Cue Cats, and one is just a normal one removed from new equipment. They are all under $12.00. Well... $12.01. :lol: Hope this helps hardware wise!
