PCI external connection vs. server

I'm trying to connect two measurement systems's data communication cables to a host computer. I'm trying to decide between whether to have a PCI DAQ board connected to the computer, or to have the measurement system communicate to the host computer through a server. Here are my questions:

1. Which way would be the easier method (I'm guessing that the first method is the easier one)?

2. If I were to use the DAQ board, I've noticed that the biggest vendors of such boards are National Instruments and Measurement Computing. Would you recommend me looking into this direction in terms of picking a board that would best suit my needs?
