photosensor

I need to make a sensor for a motor, so I was thinking, to use a IR led and a Phototransistor, and then in the motor I place something to make pulses, like a disc with a hole, like an encoder. With the pulses I want to control a TTL counter, could this be posible and if it is, could someone help me with the first part, because I dont know how to conect the phototrasistor and the ir led for the pulse.
