On a side note there is nto much point using 22V10 or a 16V8 these days. You can not really do that much inside one (10 and 8 flip flops respectively!).
The Lattice M4A5 is a nice part and is still 5V, ispMACH 4A5.
The 64 macrocell part is available in PLCC and with a little enthusiasm can be soldered on stripboard with a PLCC socket.
As far as books go, I only ever brought a VHDL book and learnt the rest the hard way (not advised!)
