i have two computers sitting side by side and want to use the same printer but not at the same time

can we have more information please. what cable's can the printer use, what os are the computers running, are the computers networked, what printer is it etc...?

Network the computers. With two computers you can use a simple crossover cable instead of a network switch/hub.

Network the two computers, connect the printer to one of them and then on the system the printer is connected to enable Printer Sharing through the operating system. You can network as 3v0 suggest.
