where do you guys buy gears and pulleys? i need some small stuff to go from steppers to shafts. like 1/4" and 5/15" shafts. is there a mail order place or something?

Small Parts Inc, MSC Industrial Supply is likely to have what you want. MSC search engine is pretty good - the sell to anyone and have always taken good care of me. McMaster Carr is another one.
