A 7905 is a negative voltage regulator. You probably need a positive voltage regulator unless your car is extremely old and has a positive ground (British?).

Oops, typo, I meant 7805

Heh from what thought was going to be a "simple" circuit has now become slightly complex! I do understand the need to protect the circuit, but DANG! But I do understand how noisy and such an automotive electrical system can get.
