Most sites I've looked at say when wiring the comparator output to the base of an NPN transistor, to put the load before it. Will it hurt to put the load after it? If so, why?

hi,
Most standard comparator IC's are open collector output, so they require a resistor [load] to the +V supply.
Being open outputs, they can only 'sink' current not 'source' current.
