Hi

Here is a short guide on building a rack-mount, 3 LCD Panel to monitor up to 3 computers. When you turn off the computer monitor, you can use this to check its CPU load, hard disk space, temperature, etc.
Great if you are doing a CPU intensive job on the computer that takes hours to complete.

The software I use is LCDSmartie.

I have been using smartie for long time.

He is using Parallel port.Have you consider using serial back pack for the serial communication method works under serial port?

The simple hardware used for that PIC16F628A + MAX232 + Character LCD

It has an additional feature when the computer loading process it will display some message as well.

Do you have the circuit to use HD44780 with serial?

the hd44780 won't do serial. Gayan recommends a "middle man" approach. you send serial data to a microcontroller, and it uses a parallel port to send data to the display.

here is a prefab option for you (they also provide schematic and code, so its easy to reproduce)
