Recommend a digital compass please

I'm looking for some one to recommend a digital compass. I'd like to combine it with my gps module project for extra navigation capabilities.

I've seen some on the net but they were all overkill/too expensive.

Any ideas?

It would be nice to get an accurate module for 10 or 15 bucks. I saw some for like 30 bucks or more, which I think is too much. I could deal with an IC and just make a PCB for it, but I'd rather just have the module.

I recently bought two never-installed automotive solid-state lcd readout compasses at a garage sale for $0.50 ea. Dont know if they could be hacked?

The Honeywell HMC5883L seems to be a cheap one (3.79 USD) and the datasheet promises "1° to 2° Degree Compass Heading Accuracy".
Digi-Key - 342-1082-1-ND (Manufacturer - HMC5883L-TR)

30 bucks is not much for a complete digital compass module.
