Repairing thermocouples by spot welding

Hi,
All out thermocouple ends have come apart.
We need to spot weld them.
But the welder costs £1800

So do you know what size capacitor is in there?, and to what voltage they charge it for the weld?
Also, why does the welding "connection" surface have to be a block of carbon, (which also costs £35)

Simple answer, don't buy such tools from Farnell (or RS) - why go to the most expensive supplier you can find?.

However, what are you doing to break the thermocouples?, and why not just replace them - preferably with ones that don't break.
