Resistor+pot

So when resistor are wired in series thier resistance doubles and then when they are wired in paralell their resistance divides, what happens when a pot is wired in paralell or series with a resistor?

Rt = R1 + R2 for a series circuit.
Rt = R1*R2/(R1+R2) for a parallel circuit.

It matters not if R1 or R2 is variable.
