Ok, thanks! I was planning on going to the library for just such a book this afternoon. Thanks for the advice, and thanks for tolerating my stupid questions
 
Glad I could help - everyone is a beginner at some point, and the trick is to get the most knowledge with the least fried parts.
 
Here's the final schematic I redid, with all the grounds connected to the - side of the power supply. Does everything look correct?

I guess it's "right" - but I think you've just illustrated the reason why we tend to use symbols to indicate ground connections...
 
What's the name of the software? I'll put it on my list of things to avoid It would be *extremely* strange to find software which doesn't deal with ground properly though.
