For cell phone applications? It seems to be a standard. The good reasons for a standard like this are:

1) Interoperability across manufacturers of similar equipment. That makes competition and that makes lower prices for YOU! $$

2) Since there is only a single standard, that allows for many more accessory products to be available. More choices for you.

why they chose the size they did, I don't know but you might find the reasoning in the specifications which, I did not locate.
