Has anyone looked into making their own 3D printer (stereolithograph machine)?? I'm sure the mechanics of it shouldn't be too hard, it's mainly what you want to make your 3D object out of, and the method used for that, which would create the difficulty....unless of course, someone out there has the answers Also converting the STL file data to machine code would be a trick i think, though i think it would make a really good project!! One that could create wax models for lost wax casting would be useful.

Google for "3D printer" DIY

You will find that there are a few designs out there. One guy is even working on a machine that builds the design from sugar!
