Super Prices on Eelctronic Stuff

well, then you'll like allelectronics. and you should always check out mouser or jameco since goldmine is frequently more expensive than new from them.

frankly, I kind of dislike goldmine because they have a "radio shack" marketing approach - make it seem better than it is. every time I've bought from them, at least one item was not exactly as their ad copy made out. allelectronics seems to be pretty restrained in their hyperbole and I've never been dissapointed. Their customer feedback postings keep them honest and often give great advice. In addition, I've gotten some screaming deals from them like the game module that had an adxl202 accelerometer on it for $2. Wish I'd bought more.

Jameco is the best. I just got a package from them today. SRAM, EEPROM, CAPs, POTs, Resistors, and jumper wire. www.jameco.com

I like Jameco as well. They have great prices, and fast shipping for some reason. It only takes 2 days to ship it from California to Erie, PA. It must just be how the routes are set up and whatnot. Although it took 2+ weeks last time because the USPS thought I had moved or something. I thought I was out $75 for sure.

there must be an 1000 posts regarding the surplus electronics vendors ... dont forget bgmicro.com and mpja.com

also keep in mind, many of these items while new, they aren't newly made, and the reason they're being sold surplus is they've been replaced by faster / better / cheaper components ... example: mosfet transistors ... the surplus fets are real dogs in terms of Rds(on) and other specs, compared to what you can pickup from digi-key, and the newly made parts are most often cheaper too.

I have bought stuff from the before, too. Not much for nit-picky components, like specific cap, and resistors, but they do have some damn good deals. :)

electronic goldmine has better prices than allelectronics

are you affiliated with them?

sometimes yes, sometimes no. I suggest people shop multiple sources instead fixating on just one. and like i said, mouser and jameco are far better for standard items. in general all and goldmine are good for one of a kind deals.

but hey, shop where you want.

Ohh I was just about to throw in **broken link removed** myself.

Surplus is SOMETIMES sold off because they're obsolete. But also many if not most of the great stuff I get are quality stuff. The MOST common problem is you CAN'T get an equivalent part retail, and you base your project on something that you can't make a lot of and if you publish your design no one else can reproduce it.

The low availability of the parts is the most common reason for it being surplus.

I see high voltage MOSFETs there that would kick ass over anything I could get retail for many, many times the price.

I just ran across **broken link removed**. I've never ordered from him, but he seems to have good prices, and he charges $1.95, flat rate, for shipping any order, anywhere in the USA. He doesn't have a lot of odd parts, or any surplus, but he does have a good selection of PICs, ICs, caps, resistors, etc.

glitchbuster is pretty good for PICs and related stuff. Randy is a good guy and works hard to offer good deals for people. He is a one man operation so sometimes he is a little slow on shipping but if you get an email response, you are good. You can get cheaper PICs from mouser but his shipping is as good as it gets so you may come out ahead. By the way, it used to be $1.65 flat rate shipping.

circuitspecialists is also a good one, as is digikey.

i wanted to order a few odds and ends, soldering irons tips, a solder wick, nothing heavy, maybe $20 in parts from circuit specialists, and their cheapest shipping option was $15 ... needless to say, I haven't visted with them lately.

I have the same problem with them.

Wow, that is pricey shipping but the last time I order from them (a year or so ago), I don't recall seriously high shipping.

on digikey - they seem to actively discourage the little guy. Q1 prices are usually pretty high and then take a sharp drop at like 25 or more. Mouser, on the other hand, seems to encourage small sized orders with lower Q1 prices. I only buy from digikey if others don't have what I'm looking for. To be fair, there are some exceptions, like atmel chips where mouser is always higher but for standard stuff, mouser is almost always cheaper. I just wish mouser would carry National and Linear chips.

Weird...I've never had an issue with goldmine. Everything that I've gotten from them has always been as advertised.

I wish more places would offer shipping by mail. The US Postal Service does a better job than many give them credit for, and they deliver on Saturdays.

Usually I am buying very small items and the shipping cost would be much less by mail. You pretty much can't ship anything anywhere for less than $6 by UPS

I mostly buy my new stuff from Mouser because I get 2 day service by UPS ground (from Texas to Mississippi), almost every package is 6 dollars and change to ship.

Last week I bought an item from Parallax (in California). I had it shipped 1st Class Mail. I ordered it at night and they shipped it the next day. The box it came in would have held everything in my last order from Mouser.

Shipping cost was $2.07 and it arrived 2 days after it was shipped.

Yeah, the post office rocks. UPS...does not....to say the least...they're terrible.

Mouser and, I think, digikey offer a USPS option for orders under 1 lb. It takes a lot of small parts to go over 1 lb.
