Testing LCD

hi... can i ask is there anyway to test whether an external LCD is working w/o connecting it to PIC18f452 and running a program? is there any way like we can just enable the LCD and the LCD should at least show a cursor to indicate that it is working..

If you just connect power and a contrast control, by turning the contrast up you should be able to see a line of block characters - this is as much testing as you can do without connecting it. It's also what you get if your driving program isn't written correctly!.
