I'm confused ... so when you told the police he'd stabbed your sister, he hadn't? How did you plan to explain that to the police when they eventually came?

I didn't. I planned to prompt them into coming before he drove away with the entire contents of my sister's flat. Didn't work. There had clearly been a breakdown in communications though, they didn't even ask if she was injured.
