I mentioned before that im keen on designing a go-cart. I know that three-phase motors are more readily available than single phase motors for rating above appx 1kW. And the Single phase motors usually require a cheaper speed contorller due to the number of switches. Are there any other advantages and disadvantages for using the motors. Any Technical advantages of three phase over single phase motors when it comes to electric vehicles.
You need to bear in mind that most 3Ø motors are 120/208 Volts or 220/380 or 240/415 Volts.
A very heavy batterybank is needed to give you voltage at the dc rail for the chopper src's to drive a 3Ø motor.
As already said at low freqs the motor is not very efficient and forced cooling may be required.
A 12 or 24 Volts DC motor will be you best bet.
The advantage of a 3 phase motor is that power is always being delivered(when energised) A single phase has moments when no power is being delivered, at the 0v crossing. Momenteum carrys on but no power is being added. You might look at rim drive wheels, where the motors are the wheels.
