ive been looking at these tone testers

they test a cable by having a tone transmitted down the cable, you then pick up the tone with a probe, the probe is basically an inductive amplifier.
I want to build one to detect tones within the 500hz to 3000hz range. On detecting a tone a want an led to light, i also want to be able to adjust sensitivity as required.
any ideas??
