Transistor equivalent

I'am searching for the equivalent of D965 transistor.

This is the data for it; NPN, 40V, 5A, 750mW..

A ZTX851 looks to be a reasonable replacement, as long as gain is not too critical, though note that the lead arrangement is different:

As always, it's not a good way to try and replace a transistor by looking for something of a similar specification, what you really need is something to take it's place in the application in which it's been used.

The datasheet shows that it's quite an unusual transistor, as it's amazing high current yet very low power dissipation - it's doubtful if that is a requirement of the circuit it's been used in though?.

So what does the transistor do?, and do you have a schematic?.

without a schematic, this could be a difficult device to replace as it has an ft Ft 150Mhz as well as a very high Hfe (180-800)... i haven't a clue why it got a 2SD designation with such a high Ft, since 2SD designations were generally for transistors with a low Ft (below 30Mhz or so).

150MHz is common for small signal switching or audio transistors, which this is - and as I said above, you should be replacing the 'application' and not the original device.
