Use of an NE556 IC

Hello guys,

I want to rectify a problem at my work place. I thought of using an NE556 to control two timed processes. I want it to be in way that when ones goes on, the other goes off. How can i achieve this? I have never used such an IC but i would love to learn. Suggestions of the use of another device for the same process is highly appreciated. (Not microcontrollers please)
