My 78M05b SMD voltage regulator is getting warm (140° F) driving a 7 segment LED running around 126ma.

Is this a cause for concern? Is there a better VR that I should be looking at that might be a similar size?

Thanks!

SF

EDIT: FWIW, the voltage coming into the VR is ~15 volts.

Hi,

your regulator just gets to about 60deg/C.

It has to dissipate 1.26W and I consider gaining that temperature being normal.

You might reduce the input voltage to 9V at which it has to dissipate ~500mW.

Yes, it has a maximum die operating temperature of 150°C (300°F) so you've got nothing to worry about, see the datasheet.
