im after a circuit as i have a power supply thats is giving out 17volts DC 4amp i want to make it variable voltage and still get 4amps

To get 1V 4A starting with a 17V supply, a linear regulator will dissipate P = IE= (17-1)*4 = 64W, which will need a huge heatsink, or a smaller heatsink and a FAN. Are you prepared to deal with the heat?

(17-7) * 4 = 40W, so you still need a large heatsink. Look at **broken link removed**
