What is an 'XTAL'?...?

Hi. I am trying to work out how a shop bought kit works, but i don't know what an 'XTAL' is. Can anyone help?

XTAL is the short form of cristal, a quartz cristal.
they are used to generate accurate frequencies in electronic circuits especialy for digital and clocks.
