What to drive a led matrix with

Hi,

I have a bunch (40) of 8x8 lex matrixs that I want to be able to drive, but I don't know what ic(s) to get to do it.

I just used i/o pins on my picaxe to drive one one of these to get it going but now I want to be able to get them all going at once & use them like a marquee.

So, what ic's would be best :p to get to drive these leds? I'd like to use something current rather than try and source an obsolete part.

I'm kinda new to all of this so keep that in mind.

Can you use a row & column driver like this?

Came up from a google hit "8x8 led driver"

Try spending some time doing simple searches..

OK, so here are the calculations for power on such a display.
For a 16x80 LED you'll need to run up to 80 LEDs at once, to get any brightness at 1/16 duty you'll probably have to pump about 60ma through each LED.
So you'll need a 4.8A LED power supply AND at least 5A drivers.

Maxim makes nice 8x8 LED driver ICs like the MAX6960.

Where do I purchase the Maxim ICs from? I looked around at a few places I usually order stuff from and couldn't find the Maxim 6960. :confused:
