How do I avoid using an inverter to operate my laptop while in the car? Would a 12VDC to 16VDC converter be simpler? I need 16VDC 4A for the laptop. Can I build one of these? If so, where would I find a schematic? Please advise.

That only gives 1.6A which is way under the requirements of 4A.

Another solution is the LM5022, a typical exampl can be found on the datasheet which also give calculations and application hints on customising it to your own specifications.

Have a look at www.maplin.co.uk

They sell a device that plugs into your lighter socket on your car and uses a switch mode PSU to boost the voltage up to a various range of voltages between 12 and 24 volts at up to 6 amps.

I use one myself and it works quite well.
