Am trying to build a up/down counter with a sensor to sense an object(cans) to increment and decrements am using a touch switch with a 555 ic so how can i add the counter and what kind of sensor should be used

Is the can static or moving? Size? Aluminum or steel?

The simplest sensor could be just a microswitch actuated as the can moves over it. Or you could use a reflection-type optical sensor, a beam-break optical sensor, or a sensor responsive to the electrical/magnetic propereties of the can.
