Add a 100uF supply bypass cap and it will be brighter for much longer as the battery voltage runs down as its internal resistance increases.

When I was young I added a 100uF supply bypass capacitor to my calculator that had an LED display. Its 9V battery lasted 10 times longer and the display was much brighter!
